WTXGA August 2012 Newsletter

SKnight579 August 3, 2012

Welcome to the first WTXGA Newsletter. I’ve been thinking about doing this for quite some time and just never made the time to do it. Every time I want to send out an email to the local cachers to remind them about an upcoming event and so on I need to find my list and get things sent out, so I thought this may help keep everyone in the area on the same page. I have added most of the people I think would be interested in receiving this each month, if you would not like to receive it please click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email. If you have anything you would like in the monthly newsletter please send it to me.

– Travis Gilbert (SKnight579)

Geocaching in the News

Recently there has been some press in West Texas about geocaching, here are links to the news articles:

Abilene Geocachers Adopt a Street

The members of WTXGA in Abilene have Adopted a Street for holding CITO events and giving back to the community.  Their adopted stretch of road is in town on 27th St. between the Centennial Park and Oldham Rd.Their most recent CITO event was just last weekend (July 28th) I made it to Abilene to see what their stretch was like, nice curvy road, it’s not too terribly busy but lots and lots of trash.  It’s a good road for cleaning as it was in need of it.  The four cachers cleaned up roughly 8 bags of trash in around two hours.  My kiddo’s and wife also attended but went back to the car about half way through.Watch for their event caches!

The Unnamed Event

September 15 – 16, 2012 @ Lake Somerville Marina Campground

The Texas Geocaching Association is starting up a brand new annual event for the fall, The Unnamed Event is it’s current name. Why is it named that? Because it has yet to be named! TXGA is having a contest to pick this new annual events name, read more about it here: The Unnamed Event Contest and it’s Cache listing is here: The UNNAMED EVENT. I plan to be there and I hope to see more from West Texas as well. There is plenty to do in the area including some very good geocaches, and lets not forget Blue Bell ice cream tours!

Permian Basin Geocachers earn Statewide recognition for CITO!

Though it is mentioned in the newspaper article above I wanted to make note of the Permian Basin Geocachers recent award from the Texas Department of Transportation for their outstanding work in the Adopt a Highway program. TxDOT gives out one award for the “Group of the Year” in all Adopt a Highway groups across the State. In their very first year the Permian Basin Geocachers have received this award due to their diligent cleanups, cleaning twice as often as most groups, and they separate out the recyclables and turn them in for money to help pay for water and drinks for the events. They have been featured recently in Groundspeak’s Blog.

If you would like to learn more about Adopt a Highway Project please visit:

TxDOT Adopt a Highway Website.
